Return

The Alonissos of today was given this name during the first years after the liberation of Greece and is not identified with the Alonissos of the ancient. The island during antiquity was called Ikos, whiles the Alonissos of the ancient Greeks, and was probably the neighbouring island of Kyra Panagia, to the North.
The island's main port has a dull, narrow little beach of shingle and course sand that you can only access through a line of taverns.
The old town of Chora (also known as Alonissos Town) stands on the top of the hill above Patitiri, linked by a two mile meandering road or a more direct donkey path.Chora is exactly what a Greek island hill-top town should be, with white-washed houses, narrow lanes and steep steps. During the day, Chora has spectacular views across to neighbouring Skopelos and along the north-west coast. At night, the town livens up, with a wide selection of taverns.
The Kokkinokastro bay has an arresting red cliff promontory at the end of a white stone and pebble beach and not much else. There is a steep and difficult climb down to the beach through a narrow gully at the end of a steep goat track. Winter rains carve deep ruts into the path and even the goats tremble at the prospect of clambering down to the stony shoreline.
Sightseeing
MARINE PARK: The beaches around the island are rough gravel beaches. It is accessible with a moped or a boat. The ecosystem in the north side of the island is in good condition. The monachus seals Monachus-Monachus are common in the island and are protected. This seal is the rarest in Europe. In 1992, the Alonissos Marine Park was created to protect the monachus seals and other animals.
