Kefalonia is the largest of the Greek Ionian Islands located off the west coast of the Peloponnese. Novelist Louis de Bernieres put this idyllic island on the world stage when he made it the focus of his best selling saga of love and war, Captain Corelli's Mandolin. The world fell head over heels in love with Kefalonia and with a little help from Hollywood the island was suddenly transformed into one of the most desirable of all Greek holiday destinations. Kefalonia is located in the heart of an earthquake zone, and dozens of minor or unrecorded tremors occur each year. In 1953, a massive earthquake almost destroyed settlement on the island, leaving only Fiscardo in the north untouched.
Sightseeing
MONACHUS MONACHUS: They are very shy animals. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has established a station in Fiscardo.

MELISSANI CAVE: This is a sea water lake which was discovered when the roof collapsed and the sun revealed the beautiful turquoise water.

KATAVOTHRES: Near Lixouri and of very special interest is the place called Katavothres , which means pits , where thousands of tons of sea water pour into the earth and disappear, passing under the island and filling the lakes of Melissani and Karavomylos near Sami.

DROGHARATI CAVE: Nature's splendour is evident in every centimetre of this unique sculpture of earth and rock. The visitor will be impressed at the very moment that he steps into this laboratory of nature, where stalactites and stalagmites have been taking shape and form for thousands of years.

ARGINIA / MARKOPOULO: According to Lonely Planet, in the village of Markopoulo a miracle occurs every year. On the 15th of August, the saint day of the Panagia (Virgin Mary), and the second holiest day in Greece, the village church becomes infested with small snakes with crosses on their heads. The snakes are non-poisonous and are said to bring good luck to the village. As mysteriously as they have come, they disappear until next year, same time and same place. But according to a woman who grew up in Kefalonia this is a little misleading "The snakes are about 5 to 10 and they come out from 6th of August to the 15th on the rocks and the villagers collect them. This phenomenon not only happens in Markopoulo but also in an other village Arginia.

AGHIOS GERASSIMOS MONASTERY: The monastery is located near the village of Fragata and it is a very impressive building. The ceiling and walls of the new monastery are decorated with beautiful biblical scenes, and gold leaf.

FISCARDO: The picturesque and beautiful harbour village on the Northern tip of Kefalonia. Of the approximate 365 villages on this large and diverse island, Fiscardo is unique in that it was left virtually undamaged during the great earthquake of 1953 that ruined most of the historic buildings on Kefalonia.

MOUNT AINOS: It is Kefalonia's highest mountain, with an elevation of 1628m.
