Korfu has the natural beauties of its island, the picturesque of the city and villages or the wide variety of the magnificent bays and beaches that gather thousands of tourists every year. The eastern coasts offer a calm sea and a wide range of marine sports. Those who come to this side of the island may enjoy excursions on traditional fishing-boats to secluded bays or a romantic rowing-boat trip under the full moon. The western coasts offer vast sandy beaches and some fascinating bays, shaping among the rocky cliffs that actually come down to the sea. But in Corfu there are also a lot more to see. Several museums and Byzantine churches, archaeological monuments and Venetian fortresses, impressive landscapes, a superb inland that offers itself for carefree strolls on traditional paths, excellent views from the mountain of Pantokratoras where one is able to scan the sea and see the islands of Erikousa, Othoni and Mathraki, the Albanian coast, Paxoi, Antipaxoi and – if the visibility is good – the coastline of Italy. As for the entertainment, there are plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs to satisfy catholic tastes!
Sightseeing
KERKYRA/CORFU TOWN: The main town of Corfu is one of the most interesting cities in Greece due to the heavy influence of the Venetians who for centuries controlled the island. It has an interesting mixture of old taverns, new cafes, discos, clubs and shops of all types plus an amazing old city that sits in a protected area between the two fortresses. The church of Agios Spyridon, the protector saint of Corfu town, the church is a one-aisle basilica with wooden roof, established in 1589. Several other buildings, apart from the military ones within the fortresses, are: the old house of Kapodistrias, built in 1845; the building was the seat of the Prefecture until 1969, whereas today it houses the Ionian University. The building of the Ionian Parliament (where it has been declared the incorporation of Eptanissa to the Greek State), the park and the neoclassic building of Mon Repos, initially the residence of the British High Commissioner and later the summer residence of the kings of Greece, are some more buildings dated to the period of British domination.

PONTIKONISSI: Pontikonisi is the trademark of Corfu. The little island owes its name to its size. The main characteristic of Pontikonisi is the dense vegetation. On the island was built in the 13th century, the small Byzantine church of Pantokratorá. The approach in the island becomes with the boats that begins from the small fishing port that is found in front of the church of Panagia of Vlahernon.According the mythology, Pontikonissi is the rock that threw the storm the ship of Odysseus. The ship destroyed and Odysseus was founded as a castaway to the island of Feakes. An other legend says that Pontikonissi is the ship of Odysseus that Posidonas transformed in island.

ACHILLION: The Palace, located in the village of Gastouri, was erected in 1890 for Elizabeth (Sissy), the Empress of Austria as the solace of her soul. It was used as her summer retreat. Later the Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany bought the Palace. Directly below, on the coast, is the unusual Kaiser’s bridge, the stone built jetty where the Kaiser set out on his yacht for swimming trips. This beautiful building in picturesque gardens overlooks the sea and Corfu town.

PALEOKASTRITSA: Paleokastritsa is one of the most celebrated beauty spots on the island; six small coves with incredibly clear water nestle in a coastline of hills and promontories draped in olive, cypress and lemon trees. The landscape combines blue-green waters with picturesque rocky bays. Here one can see the byzantine monastery of Panagia Palaiokastritissa.

ANGELOKASTRO: A lovely place to visit for outstanding views is the ancient ruin of Angelokastro perched high on a rock overlooking the sea and the beautiful bays of Paleokastritsa.
